In 1999, co-founders of Ethical Bean, Lloyd Bernhardt and Kim Schachte, took a trip to Guatemala that changed their lives. It was there that they developed a deeper connection to a land and its people – a connection that would lead to the decision to not only make a difference, but make that difference “just better.”
As Canada’s 2nd largest roaster of 100% Fairtrade certified organic coffee, the company prides itself on being both just, and better, in everything that they do from crop to cup.
Starting with a B Corp business philosophy, Ethical Bean is driven by a consciousness for all their business practices. This commitment involves how they source the best Fairtrade certified and organic coffee, roast it and transport it to their customers – all while preserving the quality, and respecting both the environment and local communities.
As part of the international Fairtrade program, Ethical Bean ensures their coffee partners are protected, are properly compensated, and receive a premium that provides additional money to the coffee cooperatives to invest back into the community.
Inside and out, Ethical Bean takes care of its environment. Their roasting facility is 100% carbon neutral and built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Their green building and roaster uses renewable natural gas purchased from Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy supplier, and Fortis B.C.. Additionally, Ethical Bean maintains eco-friendly practices, such as using biodegradable and compostable cups and cutlery in their café, and they run a coffee bag-return recycling program.
At the core of making better coffee is their commitment to bettering the lives of those who need it the most. Every year a portion of the proceeds from Ethical Bean Coffee sales go to support two non-profit organizations giving back to the Guatemalan community.
