Marathon with a Mission
On October 19th, runners from across Canada – and around the world – will descend on Toronto’s lakeshore for the 25th annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K.
The feel-good fall event, featuring a ‘Best Dressed’ costume contest; pre-race pasta dinner; and the weekend-long Running, Health and Fitness Expo, is a great incentive to kick-off or elevate your training.
But the event is about more than just achieving personal goals: proceeds from the marathon go to a broad collection of charitable organizations, and many of these organizations are taking part in the run, as well.
One official charity is the Toronto-based Sustainability Network, which helps to further the objectives of non-profit environmental organizations – like Ecojustice, Community Environment Alliance, and Sierra Club – through forums, training, inter-organizational collaboration, and programs that connect ENGOs with First Nations and other cultural communities across Canada.
Program Manager Victor Reyes aims to grow the Sustainability Network marathon team to 15 members from its current roster of seven. To do so, Reyes has extended an enticing invitation to the public:
“By running with the Sustainability Network, you’ll not only meet new friends and support a great cause, but your individual full or half marathon fee will be covered!” “We believe in our team members,” says Reyes. “We’ve covered the registration fee, so our team can focus on training and fundraising towards – and hopefully beyond – our $5,000 goal.”
Every dollar raised by the Sustainability Network team will go to support the organization’s tireless efforts to protect, restore and enhance environmental quality in Toronto and throughout Ontario.
