DIY Lip Balm: For Silky Smooth Smoochers

I have a confession to make. I am addicted to lip chap. More realistically, I’m addicted to ALL things shiny, glossy and gooey that can be smeared on my smackers.

The need for smooth lips isn’t exactly the worst vice to have, but as an independent 27 year-old-woman who can’t go more than five minutes without re-applying some sort of lip chap/gloss/balm/moisturizer; who gets more anxiety at the thought of leaving the house sans-chap than a middle-school slow dance; AND who never has anything less than three-chaps on her at all times – that high-demand for chap comes at a cost.

Feeding a bottomless hole of lip-chapping desire goes beyond dollars and cents. Yes it costs money, but contributing to more plastic waste and putting questionable ingredients on/in my body is why I decided to say bye-bye to store-bought lip chap.

After a bit of trial and error, I came up with a concoction that is super easy to make, earth friendly, economical, vegan, and smells delish!

What you’ll need:

  • 4 to 6 small reusable containers, depending on the size (I like cosmetic tins or miniature paint pots that you can find at most art supply stores)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa butter
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil
  • 1 ½ tablespoon extra virgin olive/avocado/grapeseed/jojoba oil
  • 1-2 teaspoons loosely-packed, grated beeswax (substitute with candelilla wax for a vegan version)
  • ½ teaspoon of essential oils (I use a combination of vanilla and peppermint)

Directions:

  1. Melt all ingredients together in a double boiler and mix ingredients thoroughly.
  2. Pour mixture into containers, in layers – add a little to each container, allow to dry, then repeat until all liquid is evenly distributed.

And there you have it! All-natural kissable goodness. If you want to up the ante, try adding a couple teaspoons of beetroot or hibiscus powder for a tinted version.

TIP: In the summer I usually increase the amount of cocoa butter to prevent melting and in the winter reduce it. Feel free to experiment away to get the best consistency for your climate.
